Permits & Visas

Visa Information

A visa is required for travelling to Bhutan and it is processed and arranged by AB Travel or Bhutan Government licensed tour operators like us for all tourists travelling to Bhutan. No foreign mission or Bhutan embassy/consulate abroad can issue a Bhutan tourist visa.

Upon confirming your trip, you can send us your passport details to allow us to apply for your visa. Most visas are processed within three working days. A copy of the visa approval letter from the Department of Immigration will be forwarded to you. Your actual visa will be stamped in your passport on arrival in Bhutan and a visa clearance number is issued.

For travellers who are flying or driving overland will have to print a copy of the visa and present it upon boarding Druk Air flights. The visa fee is USD40 per person per trip.

Work visas have to be applied through the respective agencies that you plan to work for. This must be done several months in advance. International NGOs are the biggest employers of foreigners in the kingdom.

Foreigners can apply for work visas through several schools and educational institutions in the country too. Depending on the availability and requirement of the institute, your application for working in Bhutan may or may not be accepted. Today, there are several international hotels in the kingdom where dozens of foreigners to different capacities have been employed.
